ISRF Mid-Career Fellowship Competition: €100,000 Supporting Innovative Research in Social Science

The foundation aims to encourage researchers who possess an independent spirit to conduct and disseminate studies that introduce fresh perspectives and propose novel solutions to societal issues.

Who Can Apply?

The call is open to scholars based in Europe. Typically, applicants are expected to be employed on a full-time or part-time basis, in either a permanent or a temporary role, at a higher education or research institution.

Applicants should generally be at least a decade post-PhD, but exceptional cases with shorter post-PhD durations may be considered, especially if the applicant demonstrates other mid-career level qualifications such as long-term roles, leadership positions, or significant teaching duties. The fellowships aim to fully exempt the recipient from teaching and administrative responsibilities for up to a year.

Research Criteria:

The fellowship supports groundbreaking research that challenges current explanatory models and addresses empirical issues lacking adequate theoretical or methodological frameworks. Innovation can also stem from the adoption of controversial theories that question established ones.

The foundation encourages interdisciplinary projects that blend and innovate on theoretical and methodological approaches from the social sciences. Proposals from a wide spectrum of social science disciplines and interdisciplinary areas are welcomed, including those from humanities scholars.

Research Duration

Fellows will be relieved from their teaching and administrative duties for up to one year. The fellowship must begin by the end of December 2025, with the selection results announced by the end of August 2024.

Benefits ISRF Mid-Career Fellowship Research

The grant amount varies based on the proposed project and the applicant’s needs, with a maximum of €100,000 (or the equivalent in GBP)†. This funding is intended to cover the cost of the applicant’s teaching and administrative duties at their home institution for up to 12 months. The grant may also cover research expenses on a co-funding basis with the applicant’s institution.

Application Process

Interested individuals must submit their application online, in English, by the specified deadline. Each applicant is limited to one submission. Notification of outcomes will be communicated via email by the end of August 2024.
