Journalism is a dynamic and diverse field that offers many opportunities for international students who want to pursue their passion for reporting, storytelling, and informing the public.
However, studying journalism abroad can also be challenging and expensive, especially for students from developing countries or regions with limited media freedom.
In this post, I will introduce 15 journalism scholarships for international students who are planning to study journalism at the undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral level in 2024-2025.
Some of these scholarships are fully funded, while others provide partial funding or other benefits. I will also provide some tips on how to apply for these scholarships and what to expect from the application process.
The 15 journalism scholarships for international students 2024-2025 are:
1. International Center for Journalists Knight Fellowships for Media Leaders Globally 2024
This fellowship program is sponsored by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and it aims to foster innovative journalism practices across the globe.
The fellows work with media outlets, civil society organizations, and other partners in their regions to implement projects that improve the quality, impact, and sustainability of journalism. The fellowship duration is one year, and the fellows receive a monthly stipend, travel expenses, health insurance, and other support.
The fellowship is open to journalists, media managers, technologists, and entrepreneurs from any country, and the application deadline is February 29, 2024.
2. Aziz Foundation Journalism Scholarships for British Muslims 2024
This scholarship program is offered by the Aziz Foundation, a charitable organization that supports the education and empowerment of British Muslims.
The scholarships cover the full tuition fees for postgraduate journalism courses at any UK institution, and they also provide mentoring, networking, and career guidance.
The scholarships are open to British Muslims who have an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification, and who demonstrate a commitment to social justice and community development. The application deadline is not specified, but the scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis.
3. City University of London Aziz Foundation Fully funded Scholarships for Postgraduate Journalism 2024
This scholarship program is a collaboration between the City University of London and the Aziz Foundation, and it provides full funding for postgraduate journalism courses at the Department of Journalism, City, University of London.
The scholarships also include a living allowance, travel expenses, and access to academic and professional development opportunities.
The scholarships are open to British Muslims who have an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification, and who demonstrate a commitment to social justice and community development. The application deadline is July 11, 2024.
4. EJN Call for Applications Reporting on Fisheries in Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico 2024
This workshop is organized by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN), a global network of environmental journalists.
The workshop aims to equip journalists in Belize and surrounding countries with the skills necessary to report on the protection and sustainable management of fisheries in the Mesoamerican Reef.
The workshop will take place in Belize City in April 2024, and it will include field trips, expert sessions, and mentoring. The workshop is open to journalists who work for print, broadcast, or online media outlets in Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, or Mexico, and who have at least two years of experience in environmental reporting.
The application deadline is February 22, 2024.
5. CASW Sharon Begley Science Reporting Award 2024
This award is established by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW), a nonprofit organization that promotes excellence in science journalism. The award honors the legacy of Sharon Begley, a renowned science journalist who passed away in 2021.
The award recognizes and supports reporting and writing that embodies the high standards exemplified by Sharon Begley, such as clarity, accuracy, breadth of coverage, enterprise, originality, and public service.
The award is open to journalists who have published or broadcast science stories in English for a general audience in 2024, and the award amount is $20,000.
The application deadline is April 30, 2024.
6. Council for the Advancement of Science Writing Victor Cohn Medical Science Reporting Prize 2024
This prize is also established by the CASW, and it seeks to honor a writer for a body of work published or broadcast within the last five years that demonstrates excellence in medical science reporting. The prize is named after Victor Cohn, a pioneer and leader in medical science journalism.
The prize is open to journalists who have covered medical science topics for a general audience in any medium, and the prize amount is $5,000.
The application deadline is June 30, 2024.
7. International Center for Journalists Knight Awards Call for Nominations 2024
These awards are also sponsored by the ICFJ and the Knight Foundation, and they honor outstanding colleagues with the ICFJ Knight International Journalism Award and the ICFJ Knight Trailblazer Award.
The ICFJ Knight International Journalism Award recognizes journalists who have made an impact on the lives of people in their countries or regions through their courageous, innovative, and high-impact reporting. The ICFJ Knight Trailblazer Award recognizes media professionals who have advanced the field of journalism through their leadership, vision, and entrepreneurship.
The awards are open to journalists and media professionals from any country, and the winners receive a cash prize and a trip to the United States to attend the ICFJ Tribute to Journalists.
The nomination deadline is February 8, 2024.
8. Reuters Institute Journalist Fellowship Programme 2024-2025
This fellowship programme is offered by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford, and it provides an opportunity for mid-career journalists to undertake research projects on topics of their choice, related to their professional interests and challenges.
The fellows also participate in seminars, workshops, and conferences at the university, and benefit from the academic and social resources of Oxford. The fellowship duration is three, six, or nine months, and the fellows receive a monthly stipend, travel expenses, and accommodation.
The fellowship is open to journalists who have at least five years of professional experience, and who are fluent in English.
9. World Press Institute Fellowship 2024
This fellowship program is offered by the World Press Institute (WPI), a nonprofit organization that fosters understanding and awareness of the role of a free press in a democratic society.
The fellows participate in a four-month immersion program in the United States, where they learn about the American media system, politics, culture, and society.
The fellows also travel to different states and cities, visit media outlets and institutions, meet with experts and leaders, and report on stories of their interest. The fellowship is open to journalists who have at least five years of professional experience, and who are proficient in English. The application deadline is February 15, 2024.
10. Thomson Reuters Foundation Reporting on Illicit Finance in Africa 2024
This program is offered by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the global news and information provider Thomson Reuters.
The program aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of African journalists to investigate and report on illicit financial flows, tax abuse, and corruption in Africa. The program consists of two intensive workshops in April and October 2024, where the participants receive training, mentoring, and editorial support from experienced journalists and experts.
The program also provides funding for travel and reporting expenses. The program is open to journalists who work for print, broadcast, or online media outlets in Africa, and who have at least three years of professional experience.
The application deadline is March 15, 2024.
11. DW Akademie Data Journalism Scholarship 2024
This scholarship program is offered by DW Akademie, the international media development division of Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster.
The scholarships cover the tuition fees and living expenses for the Master’s program in Data Journalism at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, Germany. The program combines data analysis, visualization, and storytelling skills, and prepares the students for careers in data-driven journalism.
The program duration is two years, and the scholarships are open to journalists who have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification, and who have at least two years of professional experience.
The application deadline is March 31, 2024.
12. Fulbright-National Geographic Storytelling Fellowship 2024-2025
This fellowship program is a collaboration between the Fulbright Program, the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, and National Geographic, a global leader in visual storytelling.
The fellows participate in an academic year of overseas travel and storytelling on a globally significant theme, such as biodiversity, climate change, cultures, or human rights.
The fellows receive training and mentorship from National Geographic editors, and they share their stories through various media platforms, such as blogs, podcasts, videos, and social media. The fellowship is open to U.S. citizens who have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification, and who have demonstrated storytelling skills and experience.
The application deadline is October 12, 2024.
13. Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism 2024-2025
This fellowship program is offered by the Columbia Journalism School and the Columbia Business School, and it aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of journalists who cover business, economics, and finance.
The fellows enroll in courses at both schools, attend seminars and workshops with leading experts and practitioners, and produce a master’s project on a relevant topic.
The fellowship duration is one academic year, and the fellows receive full tuition, a stipend of $60,000, and health insurance. The fellowship is open to journalists who have at least four years of professional experience, and who are fluent in English.
The application deadline is January 31, 2024.
14. UNESCO Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2024
This prize is established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and it honors a person, organization, or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defense and/or promotion of press freedom, especially in the face of danger.
The prize is named after Guillermo Cano Isaza, a Colombian journalist who was assassinated in 1986 for denouncing the activities of drug cartels.
The prize is open to candidates from any country, and the prize amount is $25,000. The nomination deadline is February 15, 2024.
15. One World Media Awards 2024
These awards are offered by One World Media, a UK-based charity that supports and celebrates media that covers global issues, especially from the perspectives of underrepresented communities and regions. The awards recognize excellence in various categories of media, such as documentary, radio, print, digital, television, and more.
The awards are open to journalists and media outlets from any country, and the winners receive a trophy and a certificate.
