Getting Permanent Residency (PR) through Study

After completing post-secondary education in Canada, international students have many options for extending their stay and ultimately applying for permanent residency.

When it comes to applying for Canadian permanent residence, your education may give you an advantage. Canadian education and work experience are highly valued by many federal and provincial immigration programs.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) enables you to work in Canada for up to three years after completing your Canadian education.

You can then pursue the following avenues for permanent residence, while holding a PGWP:

Express Entry

The Express Entry program is one of the most popular ways people apply for permanent residence. Applications for economic class immigration are processed primarily through Express Entry.

Through the Comprehensive Ranking System, Express Entry candidates are assessed. Comprehensive Ranking System candidates are rewarded if they are young, have Canadian educational and work experience, and are proficient in English and/or French. International students in Canada often exhibit these characteristics.

Thousands of international students become permanent residents each year through the popular Canadian Experience Class (CEC) through Express Entry.

Program for Provincial Nominees (PNP)

Provinces and territories across Canada can identify immigration candidates who meet their regional economic needs through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Former international students or candidates who are specifically dedicated to international students are often rewarded in PNP streams.

It’s a province

Montreal, Canada’s second largest province, is a popular destination for international students. There are different immigration programs offered by the province than those offered by the federal government and under the PNP. Quebec also encourages former international students to become permanent residents. By way of its Quebec Experience Program, this is one of the ways it seeks to achieve this.

Other Federal Programs

Additional economic class immigration programs are run by the federal government in addition to Express Entry. International students may be eligible for special streams or exemptions from Canadian work experience requirements. Pilot programs for rural and northern immigration are included in these programs.
