Court Dismisses Suit Seeking Peter Obi’s Prosecution Over Assets Declaration
Court Clears Peter Obi
Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the last general election, was dismissed from prosecution on Tuesday by Justice Inyang Ekwo, of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
In a lawsuit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/44/23, Olukoya Ogungbeje, a human rights activist, requested that Obi be investigated and prosecuted for violating constitutional asset declaration provisions.
On November 6, the applicant filed a motion on notice dated July 3 requesting the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to investigate and prosecute the former Anambra State governor at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). Obi allegedly failed to declare his offshore holdings and associated assets, according to Ogungbeje.
In addition, he claimed the LP candidate operated a foreign account while in public service and continued to operate Next International (UK) Limited for 14 months after assuming office as governor.
As a result, he argued, these constituted violations of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act as well as the Constitution of 1999.
A motion filed by Ogungbeje to compel the CCB to invite, investigate, and prosecute Obi at the CCT had been granted on November 1.
CCB must be served 14 days before next adjourned date, according to the judge, who ordered Ogungbeje to file within seven days.
But when the matter was called on Tuesday, neither the applicant nor his lawyer were not court, and Justice Ekwo consequently struck out the suit.
